Professor Jie Zhang is Founder, Board Director and Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of Ranplan Wireless. As the CSO, he provides vision, develop grant applications and manage a handful EU and Innovate UK funded research projects on radio propagation, data-driven network planning and optimisation, millimetre wave communications, and 5G/6G. He also looks after the Company’s patent portfolio. These innovation activities keep Ranplan at the forefront of wireless technology evolution and AI revolution.
Professor Zhang has also held the Chair in Wireless Systems at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Sheffield (www.sheffield.ac.uk) since Jan. 2011. He has supervised over 25 PhDs to completion.
Along with his students and colleagues, he has pioneered research in small cell and heterogeneous network (HetNet) and published some of the landmark papers and books on these topics, widely used by both academia and industry. Since 2010, he and his team have also developed ground-breaking work in modelling and designing smart built environments. His Google scholar citations are in excess of 7500 with an H-index of 37.
Prior to his current appointments, he studied and worked at Imperial College London, Oxford University, University of Bedfordshire, and East China University of Science and Technology (PhD in 1995), reaching the rank of a Lecturer, Reader and Professor in 2002, 2005 and 2006 respectively.
